A CAMPUS THAT CARES: Preparing Evangels Staff to Recognize and Respond to Student Distress

With the recent cases and incidents that’s been occurring in the University, the 12th of October 2026 the GSWC were invited and gathered the staffs under the Evangels to talk about on recognizing and responding to students’ distress around the institution. The staffs under Evangels have able to witness and encountered students who are having signs of distress and unusual behaviours where actions were difficult and what appropriate responds will be done to deal these kinds of scenarios. Some of the staffs in Evangels were trying their best to respond appropriately but having difficulty where to channel it out, what are there protocols to be follow and how they will overcome these cases.

This is where the GSWC comes in, two of the guidance associates discuss following: first, Sir Noel Harry Estillore focused on the recognition of student distresses and signs that look out when witness these odd behaviours.  Second, Ma’am Jezreel Donna Tandoc focused on the approaches and interventions that they can do on their level. The biggest challenge that they’ve encountered is the channelling out of communication where absences of the guidance staffs at night is needed. When some of the Evangels staffs encountered students who are in distress some has establish simple talks towards to them, simple exploration towards student’s background but what’s limiting them where to channel them out. Students are commonly found performing strange behaviours in the comfort rooms around the university. Specifically, the janitorial staffs encountered students doing things that they can hide from others or seen students making the comfort rooms as their escape place.

From this talk the staffs in Evangels were able to channel out their experiences and their personal distressed that they’ve encountered around students where life and death at its peak. The guidance associates were able to provide what to look out for and what appropriate approach be done at their end. Even though troubled on how they will properly respond but still they are trying their best they can to lessen harm and to lessen distress to the students. That at this point they can be able to recognize and perform simple intervention towards students.
