GSWC Launches Kaagapay: Support Groups

The University of the Cordilleras Guidance and Counseling Office (GCO) established the Kaagapay Support Groups to provide a safe, nurturing environment where students can connect with peers who share similar experiences and access tailored interventions that promote mental health and holistic well-being. As part of this initiative, the GCO planned the gradual introduction of four support groups through the Canvas LMS, beginning with Sumikom on January 20, 2025.

Sumikom, a Kankana-ey term meaning “to come home,” reflects the need for a secure and affirming space for LGBTQIA+ students within the academic community. It embodies the university’s commitment to dignity, diversity, equality, justice, and inclusion for all.

Following this, the support group for students with special needs,

Alpas, was launched on January 31, 2025. Alpas, a Filipino word meaning “to break free,” signifies the opportunity for these students to transcend assumptions about disability and realize their full potential. With adequate support and encouragement, they are empowered to break free from perceived limitations and pursue success in their personal and academic endeavors.

The third support group, SINAG (Support, Integration, Nurture, Affect, and Growth), was introduced on February 5, 2025. SINAG aims to offer a foundation of hope and inspiration for both students and their parents by centering on holistic development and fostering meaningful connections within the family and school community.

The final support group of the season, Pahimakas, was launched on February 10, 2025. The Filipino term pahimakas, meaning “last farewell,” captures the profound emotions experienced when grieving the loss of a loved one, feelings of emptiness, longing, and unspoken words. This group was created to offer a safe and comforting space where individuals may be heard, supported, and guided through their healing journey.

Through these four support groups, the GCO reaffirms its commitment to prioritizing the mental health and well-being of every UC student. Each initiative recognizes the diverse challenges faced by the university community and ensures that no student walks their journey alone.
